More and more people are in search of some winter sun. In fact, since the start of the cold snap back in November, the number of searches for winter sun has gone off the scale. Britons sit at their desks, staring out the winter at a grey sky and snow-filled streets and daydream of warmer climes. Many of them then turn to their computer and start searching for sun.
Long-haul winter sun breaks are proving to be just as popular as short-haul escapes. It seems Brits want a slice of tropical paradise in an otherwise long stretch of dreary British winter.
Thailand is one of the most popular winter sun destinations yet again this year. It’s friendly people, affordable accommodation and stellar climate are made even more appealing by falling flight prices.
The beaches of Thailand are truly stunning, though many have been tainted by tourism. However, there are still miles upon miles of untouched stretches of pristine, white sand to be found if you know where to look. Here are some of Thailand’s best beaches for 2011 winter sun.
Koh Kood might actually be found on the country’s fourth biggest island, but thanks to a sparse population and serious lack of a tourist industry, the beaches remain unspoilt. Many of the beaches are so secluded you can only access them by boat.
Koh Samui is a haven for both the luxury high-end market as well as backpackers, but has in recent years felt a little too crowded. However, relatively undeveloped Lamai Beach on the south east of the island still feels like a tropical paradise complete with lazily dropping palm trees and azure-blue ocean.
Krabi, the mainland area used to access Koh Phi Phi is releatively underdeveloped, as most tourists head straight for the nearby islands. The beaches around Railay are exceptional: quiet, stunning and dramatic. Like Koh Kood, some – the best – are only accessed by boat and few tourists go to such effort. If you do, you will be fittingly rewarded.
A little tip: if you want a secluded and pristine beach but the hustle and bustle of night life, markets and shops, opt for an upmarket hotel in Phuket. Most of the four- and five-star hotels have their own private beaches that are little gems in an otherwise touristy resort.
Flight Centre offers cheap flights to Bangkok, the gateway to Thailand and South East Asia.
