Macedonia Yugoslavia

One such country is Macedonia, one of the oldest and most historic of all the countries in the Europe. Macedonia goes as far back as Alexander the Great, the man who is usually thought of as a Greek but in fact crafted a Macedonian Empire larger than any other seen in the world at that time.

Macedonia experienced roughly 700,000 visitors last year and the tourist trade is one that is always growing. The number of domestic tourists increased by around 25% in the first three months of the year whilst the number of foreign tourists in March 2008 was no less than 25% higher than the same month the previous year. In 2007, one of the principal tourist destinations in Macedonia, Lake Ohrid, received around 250,000 domestic and foreign tourists.

Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the southwestern part of the country on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid. The town is the most popular tourist destination in the country, largely due to the atmosphere and the extensive beaches. Ohrid is noted for many historical monuments such as Samuil’s Fortress and the Antique Theatre, both of which are exceptionally impressive and popular.

Aside from its extensive Grecian history, Macedonia bears many signs of the Ottoman Empire. Skopje, the capital, has many museums and holds many cultural and sporting events and boasts a large amount of Ottoman monuments – most notable of which is the Mustapha Pasha Mosque, one of the most beautiful and elegant buildings in the country and built by the 15th century vezir to Sultan Selim of the Ottoman empire.

Macedonia is an incredibly beautiful country and boasts three national parks and thirty three natural reserves. One of the most remarkable of these is Pelister, the smallest of the three national parks and found in the south of the country near Bitola, the second city. The park consists of the land that surrounds Baba Mountain atop which are two large glacial lakes that are known as Gorski Oči, or mountain eyes.

Now is a prime time to visit Macedonia and flights to Skopje start from £195 return on cheapflights.co.uk.
